Abstract

Although significant work from the experimental side has been contributed to explore the optimum conditions of application of Laser Shock Processing treatments and to assess their ultimate capability to provide enhanced mechanical behaviour to work-pieces of typical materials, only limited attempts have been developed in the way of full comprehension and predictive assessment of the involved characteristic physical processes and material transformations. Due to the large amount of physical phenomena arising in LSP processes, their proper development requires a deep understanding of the underlying physics and is absolutely needed for their reliable predictive assessment. In the present paper, a review on the physical issues dominating the development of LSP processes is presented along with recent developments on theoretical/computational and experimental diagnosis methods for the predictive assessment of LSP processes. In particular, methods for the experimentally validated assessment of the pressure and thermal waves applied to the treated material in LSP processes and experimentally based material behaviour models are presented along with a fundamental discussion on the need of proper modelling procedures and material behaviour data for the successful LSP process effects assessment.
