Introduction

Vibratory peening combines the shot peening and vibratory finishing processes into one process. It is a modified vibratory finishing process that induces comparable compressive residual stresses as shot peening to increases fatigue life, but with a much better surface finish condition. During the vibratory peening process, the treated specimens are inserted in an oscillating tub with polishing media. The relative movement between the treated specimens and the media produce compressive residual stresses in the surface of the specimens. It is important to understand the movement of the media as well as the impact velocity between the media and treated specimens. In this paper, a discrete element method is applied to simulate the movement of the media inside the tub and the impact velocity between the media and the treated part.

Objectives

The impact between the media and Almen strips inside vibratory tub is simulated to obtain the impact velocity. The effect of the vibratory peening parameters such as frequency and vibration amplitude on the impact velocity and the Almen intensity will be analysed.
