Introduction
Vibratory peening is a mechanical surface treatment process, in which a treated part is fixed inside the tub filled with media. Similar to shot peening, this aims to produce plastic deformation at the surface of aeronautical metallic alloys, but with much better surface finish [1]. A new vibratory peening machine has been specifically designed and equipped for this research study. The tub vibrates vertically due to eccentric rotating shafts, rests on pressurized airbags and is filled with stainless steel balls. The machine control parameters of such process are the tub movement, mass of media inside the tub, rotational frequency of the shafts, pressure in the airbags, media characteristics, position of the part, and lubrication. These process parameters of the newly built machine have not been studied in the literature.
Objectives
This research study aims to identify the machine control parameters of major importance on Almen intensity using the DOE method. Almen intensities in a range of [0.1 mmN, 0.2 mmA] were targeted to fit industrial applications on aeronautical metallic alloys.
