Introduction
Magnesium alloy is the lightest metal as a structural material having a high specific strength. Peening techniques such as shot peening and laser peening are used to improve fatigue performance of the magnesium alloy. Dry laser peening (DLP) is one of the laser peening methods, which is applied in air without any protective coatings utilizing dislocation nucleation caused by femtosecond laser-driven shock wave [1-4]. Therefore, this method has a potential to induce larger plastic deformation in magnesium alloys, which have poor plastic deformability due to hcp structure. In this study, DLP was applied to a flame-retardant magnesium alloy to demonstrate its effectiveness.
Objectives
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the DLP on the mechanical properties of a flame-retardant magnesium alloy.
