Introduction
Mechanical parts are subjected to many types of conditions that lead to part failure, such as corrosion, stress and strain, fatigue, etc. Technological research aims to avoid this failure, or to delay it as much as possible. The main objective is to improve the mechanical properties specific to the use of the part. Many treatments aim to increase the mechanical properties of materials. In this work, a thermochemical treatment such as nitriding and a mechanical treatment such as ultrasonic shot peening or mechanical surface attrition treatment (SMAT) were performed on a martensitic steel.
Objectives
The use of SMAT technology before the nitriding process could reduce time and cost. Nitriding and ultrasonic shot peening (USP) were analyzed separately before being coupled. The aim of this work is to combine nitriding with SMAT in order to make this thermochemical technology more effective. A complete analysis of several mechanical properties such as micro-hardness, nano-indentation, roughness, residual stress field and X-ray diffraction analysis was carried out on a Z38CDV5 (X37CrMoV5-1) steel.
