Biography:

Dr. Pierangelo Duó, DPhil (Oxon), MSc, CEng IMechE

Dr. Pierangelo Duó studied at the University of Turin (Italy) and completed his MSc at the École Centrale (France) with a work over Wear and Fretting Fatigue. He specialised in the field of Structural Mechanics with a PhD from Oxford University in the FOD (Foreign Object Damage) field applied to Aero-Gas Turbine, which combines Impact and High Cycle Fatigue. In Year 2005 he joined Rolls-Royce Deutschland in Germany where he started his career as Stress Engineer in the Compressor Department working over numerous components, blades, stators, casing and variable mechanism. Later he moved to the area of rotating critical components (such as Discs, Blisks, Shafts, Drums) where he has been working on stress and lifing and special process application. He successfully contributed to multiple Aero-engine certifications such as the V2500 Select, the BR725 and the new Pearl 15 to name a few.

Abstract:

Gas turbine aero-engine components such as compressor and turbine discs and blisks are subjected to surface treatments as part of the finishing manufacturing process. The application of treatments such as shot peening is one of the most common industrial procedures to prevent early fatigue crack initiation and propagation and to enhance the resistance against environmental induced corrosion fatigue, stress corrosion, wear generation and fretting.

Whilst several approaches were developed in recent years to apply numerical analyses which could reproduce the effects of the shot peening process, a historically empirical approach, based on generated knowledge and experience to define the parameters and the same process applicability, is still widely used in manufacturing. The current work aims to provide an overview of more recent challenges in the aeronautic industry to address the increasing performance demand which the applied materials have to be designed for, to sustain an efficient in-service operation. Today, Pierangelo holds a Technical Specialist function in the Critical Rotating Parts Lifing Design Engineering team focusing on Business Aviation products. He has been leading several Research & Technology projects and work-packages (both, National and EU) and he has authored many international publications as well as several patents.
